1. When to use these phrases

Why PPE words matter

PPE words are small words with a large job. On a Korean construction site, a supervisor may point at your helmet, harness, boots, gloves, or mask and give a short instruction instead of a long explanation. If you know the Korean names of the equipment and the verbs used with them, you can confirm the instruction before you enter the work area.

This lesson is not a replacement for site induction, company rules, legal safety training, or a supervisor’s instruction. It is a Workplace Korean language lesson for foreign workers who need to understand protective equipment words quickly and ask safer follow-up questions in Korean.

Check before entering

Before entering a work zone, check three things: what you must wear, whether the equipment fits, and whether anything is damaged or dirty. Korean PPE instructions often use verbs such as 착용하다, 신다, 끼다, 조이다, 점검하다, and 교체하다. The word after the equipment name usually tells you what action is required.

For example, 안전모 착용 means wear a safety helmet, 안전화 신다 means put on safety boots, and 턱끈 조이다 means tighten the chin strap. If the instruction is too fast, point to the equipment and ask 다시 점검해 주세요 or 어떤 보호구가 필요해요?

How Korean PPE instructions are built

Korean PPE instructions are often built as equipment plus action. 안전모 + 착용하세요 tells you to wear a helmet. 턱끈 + 조이세요 tells you to tighten the chin strap. 파손 + 교체하세요 tells you to replace damaged gear. Once you learn this pattern, new sentences become easier to decode.

Pay attention to fit words too. 헐겁다 means loose, 맞다 means fit or correct, and 사이즈 means size. These words help when equipment is too large, too small, or not secure. A simple phrase like 사이즈를 바꿔 주세요 can prevent guessing.

What supervisors may say

A supervisor may say 안전모 턱끈 조이세요, 안전대를 생명줄에 연결하세요, 보안경 착용하세요, or 파손된 장갑은 교체하세요. Your response can be short: 네, 다시 점검하겠습니다. If you are not sure, ask 이게 맞아요? or 다시 말해 주세요.

How to ask again safely

  • 보호구를 착용해야 해요? Do I need to wear protective equipment?
  • 안전모 턱끈을 조이면 돼요? Should I tighten the helmet chin strap?
  • 이 안전대가 맞아요? Does this harness fit correctly?
  • 파손되었으면 교체해 주세요. If it is damaged, please replace it.
  • 다시 점검해 주세요. Please check it again.
  • 어떤 보호구가 필요해요? Which protective equipment do I need?

Mini dialogues

Supervisor: 안전모 턱끈이 헐거워요. 단단히 조이세요.
Worker: 네, 이렇게 조이면 돼요?
Supervisor: 네. 작업 전 보호구를 다시 점검하세요.

Worker: 이 안전대가 맞아요?
Supervisor: 아니요, 사이즈가 큽니다. 예비품으로 교체하세요.
Worker: 알겠습니다. 교체 후 다시 확인받겠습니다.

Five-minute review routine

After work, write down five PPE words you heard or saw. Add the Korean word, pronunciation, meaning, and one action phrase. Review the list before the next shift. The goal is not perfect grammar. The goal is to recognize the equipment, understand the required action, and ask for confirmation before moving.
